Better file management

Windows Explorer does the job so well that its interface has been copied by many other utilities. Nonetheless, it hasn't really been improved in recent versions of Windows and Microsoft now seems intent on steering us to using My Computer, which is less rather than more convenient.

Powerdesk 5 Express is a free, but slightly limited, version of Vcom's Powerdesk Pro. Pro offers the following features, most of which are available in the free version:

  • Replaces Windows Explorer
  • Moves, copies, zips, label, color code, search, view, prioritize, convert and and views your files fast and easy.
  • Provide access one, two or three click access to most PowerDesk tools
  • Launches dual file manager panes
  • Includes sort indicator
  • Improved command line
  • Runs dialog command center
  • Resizes copy/move dialog is now resizable
  • "Show generic icons" speeds up the display of folder contents
  • Displays customisable "Toolbar"
  • Prioritizes and organizes files with color coded file folders
  • Offer the option to add notes/tips to your files
  • Gives file-type specific information about a file (i.e. size and format of graphic images, song name and length for MP3s, notes, etc.)
  • Customised information columns - drag or select the columns you want displayed and in what order
  • And more!

It is occasional nagware in that it occasionally will remind you how many times you have used it and suggest you upgrade. However, it offers an unlimited free trial with no obligation to upgrade.

There are other Windows Explorer replacements, but Powerdesk is my favourite. Do a search if you want to compare it with something else.
