| A smaller, better Windows
The ultimate customisation tool was developed right here in Australia. Microsoft said it couldn't be done with Windows 98, but a young Australian hacker proved it could and produced tools for Windows 98, 98SE and ME (98lite). Now he has produced tools for Windows 2000 and XP (2000lite and XPlite). There are free versions and for a modest sum there are full featured versions. The free version of 2000/XPlite is somewhat limited with most features labelled "Pro only". However, the free version of 98lite is quite useful. Now you can dispense with the bits of Windows you don't use and remove the bundled utilities you don't want. You can even put the Windows 95 interface on Windows ME! Available from: Even without the LitePC tools, you can reduce the size of Windows by leaving out bundled utilities that you don't need. For example, if you are going to install an Office suite, do you really need WordPad? If you are going to install a utility suite, do you need System Tools - Defrag, Scandisk etc.? Go into Control Panel and click on Add/Remove programs. From there go to Add/Remove Windows components and remove some of the bundled utilities that you don't need. Stripped down for action, Windows will run faster and with greater stability. Try it. Note: If you find you cannot put back something you have unbundled from XP using Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel, run XPLite and you'll find that you can. |
