Cleaning Up Strings of Folders

When you open a folder in My Computer, Windows Me and XP place a window on the screen, displaying its contents. Then, if you double-click a folder within that window, yet another window appears to display the second folder's contents.

Dig deep inside some folders to find one that's buried deep within your filing system, and you end up with a string of folder windows cluttering your desktop. But it doesn't have to be that way. Hold down Ctrl while double-clicking on a folder. Instead of opening a new window to show that folder's contents, Windows Me and XP simply display the new folder's contents in the existing folder's window. That feature enables you to dig deeply into your folder structure without opening any extra windows.
